President Rodrigo Duterte took the international media by storm when he made a straightforward remark on the United Nations he thinks is meddling with is administration’s fight against drugs. He threatened to leave the organisation and criticised the UN for failing to address hunger and terrorism citing Syria and Iraq instead of worrying on bodies of criminals that are piling up.

Duterte has always been passionate about his stand against ending drugs and its associated criminality. His stand however, has met a lot of criticism including the international community. But Duterte as he is, is not to be brought down by bullies and instead launched his own attack to the organisation.

To the un-initiated his remarks may be confounding but some foreigners look at him in a different way which can only make you and I prouder that we have made the right decision in voting for this man.

I bet you would agree with me, Leila De Lima rose to popularity because she is hated and here’s why.

  1. Leila De Lima had a lackluster performance as chairperson of the Commission of Human Rights. She defended the rights of criminals, terrorists and communists rather than the innocent law-abiding victims.

  2. She is pro-communist, actually, terrorist. She is related to the CPP-NPA Founder Jose Maria Sison. Sison’s wife, Juliet de Lima is third cousin of Leila’s father.

  3. She is incompetent. The National Bilibid Penitentiary became the biggest laboratory of methamphetamine or shabu in the country under her watch as Department of Justice Secretary.

  4. She is sexually promiscuous. She sleeps with several men including a fugitive. Her sex videos with two different men are out for public consumption.

  5. She is chummy with hardened criminal Jayvee Sebastian. Sebastian has his own luxury apartment and a recording studio in National Bilibid Prison.

  6. She has got no shame nor delicadeza. You see her in parties with the biggest drug lords and drug protectors in the country. This is by far her most consistent social media exposure.

  7. She gives preferential treatment to cases such as that of celebrities Vhong Navarro and Cedric Lee instead of the most critical cases of national importance.

  8. She could not walk the talk. She constantly attacks Duterte even when the former was still mayor of Davao City but until now she has not filed a single case. Because, she has got no substantive evidence.

  9. She is ambitious. She enjoys the flicker of attention by the media. She used this exposure to get a seat in the senate. Up to now I could not figure out how she won except for narcopolitics.

  10. She is hateful in all angles. She has an annoying personality with a forced accent. She wears a scarf around her neck loose. And I wish that one day, she strangles herself with it.

I remember Marimar. She is the infamous drug queen who controls the biggest drug distribution industry in Mindanao. She is feared. She is powerful.

The Beauty of Thalia

The first time, I heard her name decades ago, I think of the beauty of Thalia. I think of a face that could launch a thousand ships. What else can I think of, of a powerful drug queen in the region? There are many beautiful Maranao women I knew of. She must be beautiful to seduce men and lead a complicated drug industry. Each time her name crops up on occasions when we talk about drugs, the face of the beautiful Thalia comes up.

Thalia is the beautiful Marimar in the television novel.

Marimar and Death of Rivals

For years, I know and learned which part of the city to avoid. I also learned she became a Mayor in Lanao del Sur. That’s how she probably earned her nickname Mayora. She had in fact killed some of her rivals and anyone who got in her way, my source said.

Marimar and Speeding Ambulance

All throughout the years I lived in Northern Mindanao, I was wary and suspicious about speeding government ambulances with sirens on. I know they are used to transport drugs. Each time I think of drugs in the area, I think of Marimar.

I never thought that after several decades, Marimar the powerful drug queen will be arrested in a drug bust. And I also never thought that the picture of Thalia that stuck in my head is debunked. Marimar the drug queen is just a homely bitch of a face who wrecked millions of lives.

Mayora Marimar is the Mindanao Drug Queen with a very ordinary appearance.

Two Ladies With Blood Stained Clothes

But I will tell you my story which happened decades ago.

One night, my mom opened our door to two ladies. They looked distraught – horror-stricken about to pass out anytime out of fear. We let them in and shut our door.

One is still conversant. The prettier one however, is almost incoherent. She looked pale. Her mood was shifting from blank to fear and sometimes talking to herself. She was on the verge of losing her sanity.

Both of them worked as housekeepers in a Maranao household. That night, they were running away from the powerful family for good. They have witnessed murder many times. In fact, they helped clean up blood, body parts, and dispose of dead bodies. I believed them – I see stains on their clothes.

I did not sleep well that night. I was terrified. I pitied the ladies especially the one on the verge of insanity.

The ladies left our house early to flee from their pursuers. I never heard from them anymore.

I don’t know if the household they worked for is that of Marimar’s. But what I was sure of was that the violence in their household is drug-related.

A Common Hush-Hush Topic

Marimar the drug queen continues to be a common topic me and my friends talk about. She was untouchable. She has a powerful clout in Mindanao. She was feared even by the police themselves.

I never thought she would be arrested knowing how powerful she was.

The End of Marimar

Marimar is Johaira Abinal. Her husband Major Suharto Tambian Macabuat who was arrested with her, is assigned at Headquarters Support Group of the Philippine Army in Fort Bonifacio. Mayora Marimar supplies illegal drugs in Regions 10, 11,12, Caraga, the ARMM region and Metro Manila. She has links with the Chinese industry where she gets the illegal drugs she distributes in the country.

There is something about drugs, chopper accidents and the Liberal party that tickles my imagination.

On May 17, 2010, Governor of Quezon Province, Rafael Nantes died in a freak chopper accident. His helicopter exploded in mid-air.

In August 18, 2012, Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo died in a suspicious aircraft accident. The wee plane crashed into the sea.

Investigations of both accidents pointed to pilot error as the major cause of the tragedies.

Poor pilots always the sacrificial lambs.

Governor Rafael Nantes

Nantes and Robredo were both associated with the Liberal Party. The Liberal Party however, is mired in allegations of protecting and profiteering from the multi-billion dollars drug industry.

Nantes was the National Treasurer and chief fund-raiser of the Liberal Party during the May 2010 elections. Nantes was investigated for his involvement in a drug shipment and manufacturing base in Quezon Province. The investigation followed after a drug bust made by the Presidential Anti-Smuggling Group was made four days before the 2010 elections. The amount generated by the drug base was estimated to be 8.4 billion dollars. This huge amount of money is reported to fuel the 2010 presidential election as well as to be used for massive cheating in the polls.

Benigno Aquino III, the standard-bearer of the Liberal Party won the May 2010 elections.

A few days after on May 18, 2010, Rafael Nantes died in a chopper accident. After almost a year, Nantes’ widow, asked Department of Justice Leila de Lima to investigate the death surrounding her husband. Nothing happened to the investigation, of course.

Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo

Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo was projected by the media as a close friend of Benigno Aquino III. The public knows however that Aquino hesitated in appointing Robredo for the DILG post. Somebody else was salivating for the position, we all know him, Mar Roxas. Jesse Robredo was considered by many to be a good egg in a basket of rotten ones. In fact, before his death, he was investigating personalities in the government. One of them was General Joel Pagdilao, an alleged drug protector.

On August 18, 2012, Robredo lost his life in a plane crash. It seemed that Robredo’s death was his fate as he chose to take the wee plane. But the circumstances surrounding his death if probed further is questionable. His widow, now, elected Vice President Lenie Robredo brushed them all off and accepted his husband’s death as is. This, even as she knows that days after her husband’s death, Interior Undersecretary Ronnie Puno with Gen Joel Pagdilao and Gen Oliver Tanseco stormed into Jesse’s condominium to secure classified documents that Jesse kept. She merely reported the attempted “burglary”.

I wonder what kind of wife or vice president Lenie Robredo is.

Were they killed to protect the bigger names in the Drug Industry?

I was pretty much disturbed by Nantes’s death six years ago. Moreso that Benigno Aquino III, whom he raised funds for, won the Presidential elections. But nobody listens to my conspiracy theories. The next six years that ensued is a sickening spite of drug-related crime and corruption.

When Robredo died in another aircraft accident. It felt odd. But what bothered me the most are the classified documents in Robredo’s condominium that were purportedly stolen by Ronnie Puno and suspected drug protector Gen. Pagdilao. Not surprisingly Mar Roxas took over the DILG post. The next four years was the glory days of the drug industry. Drugs were in fact, manufactured and traded unhampered in New Bilibid Prison.

Mindanao fashion designers had their share of fame and honor during President Rodrigo Duterte’s inauguration on June 30, 2016. Cagayan de Oro silk weavers and fashion designer however are the proudest. Duterte is the first president of the Republic of the Philippines who comes from Mindanao.

President Duterte wore a barong made of Mindanao silk on the day of his inauguration. The Mindanao silk is woven by the Ayala Beneficiaries Association Incorporated based in Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental. The silk comes from a farmer’s cooperative based in Claveria Misamis Oriental who grow silk worms and process the silk into yarn. The luxurious Mindanao silk is sold at Laguindingan airport and is also made available for order online.

Cagayan de Oro based fashion designer Melody Mae Parrel-Pimental designed the simple barong with a Philippine flag emblazoned on the chest. Duterte has always emphasized and chosen simplicity, comfort (non-itchy fabric) and of course nationalism. Think the Philippine Flag. Mimi Pimentel’s boutique is located in Gaerlan-Capistrano Streets, Cagayan de Oro City, near the St. Augustine Cathedral.

Sebastian Duterte looked dashing as always with his barong made of Mindanao silk from Laguindingan Misamis Oriental and designed by the Davao Fashion and Design Council (DFDC). His barong has hand-embroidered ethnic pattern designs reflecting Mindanao’s diverse culture. Kate Necesario his partner, wore an elegant piña terno designed by the Council.

Inday Sara looked regal in her royal blue Filipiniana gown designed by Silverio Anglacer. Her mother, Elizabeth Zimmerman, ex-wife of President Duterte, wore Filipiniana-inspired gown designed by Anglacer.

Paolo wore a piña barong tagalog designed by Erwin Lee Tan with minimalist tribal motifs. He also dressed the whole family wife and children.

President Duterte’s partner Honeylet Avanceña and daughter Veronica wore gowns designed by Chardin’s Aries Escarilla. Chardin is Rody Duterte’s favorite couturier. His signature plaid polo shirts are designed and tailored by Chardin.

This year is truly remarkable for Mindanao fashion designers and fabric weavers. Duterte’s choice of fabric is not only sophisticated but also practical. It will help spark a growing interest and demand of Mindanao silk both locally and internationally.

A Mindanaon myself, and coming from Misamis Oriental, I am also proud and hopeful for the silk industry and for the men and women who are earning their livelihood from it.
